Show Crush/Double Band Crush: 8/22 This Car Up, Hot Box, Quiet Loudly, Gunfight at Great Scott

August 20, 2009

The Boston music scene is losing TWO fantastic bands this weekend in one great farewell lineup: This Car Up (Eric Glassman, Paul Sentz, Kevin MacDonald, Rob Motes, and Kurt Schneider), whom I first experienced a little over two years ago in an Allston basement, and Hot Box (Danielle Stolzenberg, Eric Kogelschatz, Amanda Dellavigne, and Jon Gill), whose debut show was at All Asia in early 2007. If you haven’t seen either of these bands, this is your last chance. This Car Up plays melodic, accessible indie rock with irresistible hooks (try to not sing along to “Life in a Small House”–impossible) and Hot Box embraces a more post-rock aesthetic with gorgeous intertwined guitar riffs and driving beats.

These two bands, in many ways, shaped my personal experiences as I started out on the scene, and I’ve had a lot of good times with all of these talented musicians. I’m very sad to see them go, but am comforted by the knowledge that all of the members will continue to make great music in new projects.

Thankfully, both bands leave behind excellent albums so we can continue to enjoy their legacy: This Car Up’s LP, Smile When You’re Alone, is available on iTunes, as is Hot Box’s Four Eyes (review here).

This Car Up, Hot Box, Quiet Loudly (CD Release), Gunfight! (party rock all the way from Brooklyn) @ Great Scott, Saturday, August 22. 21+, 9pm, $9
