C.D. on Songs: Hands & Knees – "Close Your Eyes"

April 19, 2010

As your local stoner snickers uncontrollably, you can wrap up your 4/20 right (that’s tomorrow, you w33d enthusiasts) with a trip to The Middle East Downstairs to witness locals Hands & Knees (nominated in the Best Garage/Psych category in the Phoenix’s Best Music Poll) as they open for Quasi (!!), along with Let’s Wrestle.

Hands & Knees – “Close Your Eyes”

There’s an odd dichotomy going on in this song – Hands & Knees give us their sunniest “Good morning, World” sound but at the same time beseech us to “Close Your Eyes.” What gives, Hands & Knees? These sorts of mixed signals serve only to intrigue the listener and give cause to listen more… closely.

The simple, doo-wop chord progression of the “verse” also makes us want to get further into this song. The sound of this song is undeniably new – from Joe O’Brien’s raspy voice that tests (yet never exceeds) its limits to the crystal clear tones of the acoustic guitar. “Close Your Eyes” has absolutely no pretense. There is nothing hidden behind the curtain. Heck, there isn’t even really a curtain.

This song’s simple charm is also its deceptive allure. One looks for the trick or the turn or the prestige, but the reveal shows us that there’s no real paranormal activity here. “Close Your Eyes” is simply a fun, almost joyful song that has a tone. The bridge brings a quasi-serious tone that is simply a more hushed version of the bright spirit of the song on the whole – even if it is a song that we might not necessarily expect to be bright-spirited.

Want to submit your band’s song to C.D. On Songs?

To be reviewed in a C.D. On Songs column:

*Be a Boston-based band/artist.

*Email a single mp3/m4a/etc. (or a download link to one) to cdonsongs (at) gmail (dot) com, with the subject line “C.D. on Songs” (DO NOT send us a bunch of songs and make us pick, we will ignore you). We require a file – not a streaming link.

*Include album cover art if you have any. If you don’t, a band photo or logo is acceptable.

*Tell us when you want to see it! Give us the date of your show and we’ll make sure it runs as close as possible to that day. No kidding.

We will assume that we have your permission to make the song downloadable on Boston Band Crush (readers will want to hear it, after all). If that’s not ok with you, say so and provide us with a link to the song on an embeddable player like ReverbNation – something we can include in the post (and not just link to).
