C.D. On Songs: Mongrel – "Butterknife Suicide"

April 22, 2010

Our trusty reviewerman C.D. has been stricken with a faulty computer so he asked me to post the review below for him. He didn’t, however, advise on this little italicized intro here, but I’m going to assume that he would have said something about how Mongrel’s playing a day show at the Middle East on Sunday at 1pm, or how you can get more info about Mongrel here, or maybe mentioned that Mongrel’s from the North Shore, an area where he may or may not have spent some time. Anyhoo… send good computer Mojo C.D.’s way and hopefully he’ll be back tomorrow! xo, ash

Mongrel’s “Butterknife Suicide” grabs us roughly by the shoulder, tosses us into the back of a ratty old sedan, and brings us to a beatdown. Whether we are in on the beatdown, simply watching, or the actual subjects of he beatdown is open to interpretation.

“Butterknife Suicide” opens quickly to a driving drumbeat that does not relent until, well, it’s good and done. The galloping drums are joined by a similarly powerful bassline that adds some tone to the proceedings, and then finally a crunchy, guttural guitar. It’s kind of like the scene in the movie where the gang’s car pulls up and each car door opens in turn and out step the eventual combatants, wielding brass knuckles, lead pipes and possibly a trident.

The vocal scheme matches that of the instruments. The solo agitator gets all up in your business at first, shortly turning into a gang of vocalists, all singing in unison in a variety of voices. The band shows their own mobility, going through two iterations of the build-up/beatdown”Butterknife Suicide” proves that the beatings will continue, regardless of morale.

Want to submit your band’s song to C.D. On Songs?

To be reviewed in a C.D. On Songs column:

*Be a Boston-based band/artist.

*Email a single mp3/m4a/etc. (or a download link to one) to cdonsongs (at) gmail (dot) com, with the subject line “C.D. on Songs” (DO NOT send us a bunch of songs and make us pick, we will ignore you). We require a file – not a streaming link.

*Include album cover art if you have any. If you don’t, a band photo or logo is acceptable.

*Tell us when you want to see it! Give us the date of your show and we’ll make sure it runs as close as possible to that day. No kidding.

We will assume that we have your permission to make the song downloadable on Boston Band Crush (readers will want to hear it, after all). If that’s not ok with you, say so and provide us with a link to the song on an embeddable player like ReverbNation – something we can include in the post (and not just link to).
