C.D. On Songs: Dark Martini & The Dirty Olives – "I Am The Ghost"

May 28, 2010

Now we don’t condone lateness. Ask anyone who knows me; I get there either 25 minutes early or surgically on time. I abhor latecomers. Usually. But I got a nice, nice email from leader of this band last night, offering up this song and saying that they have a show tomorrow night with The Bean Pickers Union and Tom Waitsian (yes, Tom Waitsian). I’ve got nothing). This track is so delicious, we’ll give Dark Martini (AKA Mark Dantini) & The Dirty Olives a late pass from the office for this one.

We might expect a song with this title to sound a little… spooky. And, looking at the band name/cover art, possibly a little 21th century swing music-y (although hopefully not, because they’d be around 13 years too late, amiright, Cherry Poppin’ Daddies?). Fear not, those of you not stuck in the swing revival of the late 90s, “I Am The Ghost” is not the ghost of the recent past Zoot Suit Riots, but rather a deliciously creepy shuffle around an enjoyable haunted house.

The main creeper on this track is a dark, throaty-sounding guitar that skulks around in the shadows, going “bump” in the night and occasionally peeking around the corner to shout “Boo!” at you in the form of a one-chord stab that clearly enjoys itself with each rrrrinnngg at the end of the measure.

The guitar’s other major moment is the late-song solo, wherein it demonstrates a unique style of picking every single note, resulting in a percussive attack that isn’t exactly Dick Dale-style speed-picking, but certainly more attack-y than one might expect. The creepiness is rounded out by a sweet tonewheel organ that is far too deep in the background for our tastes. Get that organ out there. That’s what she said.

Want to submit your band’s song to C.D. On Songs?

To be reviewed in a C.D. On Songs column:

*Be a Boston-based band/artist.

*Email a single mp3/m4a/etc. (or a download link to one) to cdonsongs (at) gmail (dot) com, with the subject line “C.D. on Songs” (DO NOT send us a bunch of songs and make us pick, we will ignore you). We require a file – not a streaming link.

*Include album cover art if you have any. If you don’t, a band photo or logo is acceptable.

*Tell us when you want to see it! Give us the date of your show and we’ll make sure it runs as close as possible to that day. No kidding.

We will assume that we have your permission to make the song downloadable on Boston Band Crush (readers will want to hear it, after all). If that’s not ok with you, say so and provide us with a link to the song on an embeddable player like ReverbNation – something we can include in the post (and not just link to).
