C.D. On Songs: A Bit Much – "Minimum Rhythm, Maximum Blues"

June 1, 2010

I know it probably feels like Monday. But embrace that, because this is a four-day week! Tomorrow is going to feel like Tuesday, but it will be Wednesday. This is good for you, because we’re starting June off right with the Pray For Polanski O’Brien’s residency. This week’s episode will feature our buddies Pray For Polanski with Big Big Bucks, Radio Control, and the below featured band, A Bit Much. Zing!

The album art for this track is pretty much the only hint as to what awaits you when you let this track out of its crate and let it run around a bit. The melody to “Minimum Rhythm, Maximum Blues” comes slingshotting out of the gate as if it’s powered by one of the super-springy platforms from Super Mario Brothers, and the bouncing doesn’t stop until they are damned good and ready. Which is roughly 3 and a half minutes.

This song doesn’t just have character, it has wild character. It can be hard to tell where this song is going at any given point, and that can seem unsettling and slightly daunting at first. Then you realize, “Oh, OK, I get it,” and decide that the song is somewhat catchy. All of a sudden, things start making sense. Don’t get me wrong – this song stays well in its own world of scrambly cartoon sound effects and exaggerated movements, but things won’t seem so weird after a few run-throughs.

The chord progression is the main culprit – we hope that the band wrote this together and didn’t have to teach this song to anyone, because the chord chart must look kind of crazy. There is a method to this song’s madness, what seems like a linear line of nonrepeating music does have (large) sections, and the recognition of the track’s structure is perhaps its greatest reward. You’re still left shaking your head, but it’s more of an appreciative “Jeez, you guys,” than a frustrated “What the heck, you guys?” Jeez, you guys.

Want to submit your band’s song to C.D. On Songs?

To be reviewed in a C.D. On Songs column:

*Be a Boston-based band/artist.

*Email a single mp3/m4a/etc. (or a download link to one) to cdonsongs (at) gmail (dot) com, with the subject line “C.D. on Songs” (DO NOT send us a bunch of songs and make us pick, we will ignore you). We require a file – not a streaming link.

*Include album cover art if you have any. If you don’t, a band photo or logo is acceptable.

*Tell us when you want to see it! Give us the date of your show and we’ll make sure it runs as close as possible to that day. No kidding.

We will assume that we have your permission to make the song downloadable on Boston Band Crush (readers will want to hear it, after all). If that’s not ok with you, say so and provide us with a link to the song on an embeddable player like ReverbNation – something we can include in the post (and not just link to).
