C.D. On Songs: Voda – "Cartoon Hero"

June 9, 2010

A Wednesday night rock show you seek? Ooh… Voda. You seek Voda. Take you to them I will. You must go not to the Dagobah system, but Precinct in Somerville. Tonight, when they will play what no one else but myself is calling a C.D. On Songs tribute show, featuring recent CDOS alumni The 7Cs and Hello Ninja. Now ready, are you?

There are no “Zoinks!” moments in Voda’s “Cartoon Hero” where an anvil falls on anyone’s head or anything, yet the cartoony essence of this song lies in its situational placement of who we will assume is the protagonist. While the character may not be cartoon-esque, the scenery might be; you might notice the same tree pass by in the background or some other hint that this song exists in a created world.

The collective character of “Cartoon Hero” is brought into being not so much by the vocals but the “supporting players” of guitar and rhythm section. The guitar and bass are the buddy characters of this particular comic, playing off each other like henchmen constantly on the move from one caper to the next. The bass, in particular, has an “always-on-the-move” air to it, with the occasional shiny, new-sounding string coming to the forefront of the mix.

The steady and moderate pacing of this song, coupled with the instrumental characters are the story here; with an honorable mention going to the “Hey man, I’m workin’ here” vocals that add that special verbal, human touch, all while keeping it cartoony.

To be reviewed in a C.D. On Songs column:

*Be a Boston-based band/artist.

*Email a single mp3/m4a/etc. (or a download link to one) to cdonsongs (at) gmail (dot) com, with the subject line “C.D. on Songs” (DO NOT send us a bunch of songs and make us pick, we will ignore you). We require a file – not a streaming link.

*Include album cover art if you have any. If you don’t, a band photo or logo is acceptable.

*Tell us when you want to see it! Give us the date of your show and we’ll make sure it runs as close as possible to that day. No kidding.

We will assume that we have your permission to make the song downloadable on Boston Band Crush (readers will want to hear it, after all). If that’s not ok with you, say so and provide us with a link to the song on an embeddable player like ReverbNation – something we can include in the post (and not just link to).
