C.D. On Songs: Butterknife – "Unwound"

June 14, 2010

We’re always planning ahead here – the week has just begun and we’re already thinking about Thursday night. You would too, if you knew what was happening at T.T. the Bear’s. OK, fine, we’ll tell you. It seems that our friends Sodafrog (last seen in this very column) are playing with Davina Yannetty, Hypernova (or NYC), Little, Big (also of NYC) and Butterknife (of Boston and today’s column). Now you know, and knowin’ is half the battle. B-B C!!!!

Butterknife – “Unwound”
[download it!]

Butterknife’s “Unwound” wastes no time in showing that its title is appropriate. This song starts with two heavy, heavy drum hits and then slammo! Butterknife turns on the juice. “Unwound” does not plod, walk or even jog – this track hits the ground running and goes full-speed, full-throttle, full-steam and full-everything else ahead.

It might sound like “Unwound” slows down or stops on occasion, but we instead realize that it has simply leapt into the air and is sailing – at speed of course. What goes up, must come down, and part of the fun is waiting for Butterknife to drop the hammer. Whenever the song hits the pavement, it hits hard, its feet already moving to keep up the pace.

“Unwound” has a fairly energetic and heroic sound to it. Its state of perpetual motion is brought on by the interplay between the explosive drums and the crunchy-yet-ringing (how do you do that?) guitar-orchestra that provides most of the sound. “Unwound” is an infusion of energy that has pep to spare.
Want to submit your band’s song to C.D. On Songs?

To be reviewed in a C.D. On Songs column:

*Be a Boston-based band/artist.

*Email a single mp3/m4a/etc. (or a download link to one) to cdonsongs (at) gmail (dot) com, with the subject line “C.D. on Songs” (DO NOT send us a bunch of songs and make us pick, we will ignore you). We require a file – not a streaming link.

*Include album cover art if you have any. If you don’t, a band photo or logo is acceptable.

*Tell us when you want to see it! Give us the date of your show and we’ll make sure it runs as close as possible to that day. No kidding.

We will assume that we have your permission to make the song downloadable on Boston Band Crush (readers will want to hear it, after all). If that’s not ok with you, say so and provide us with a link to the song on an embeddable player like ReverbNation – something we can include in the post (and not just link to).
