Pre-Order Crush: Aloud’s ‘Exile’ on Kickstarter

July 6, 2010

I’ve been a fan of Aloud from the very first moment I saw Jen and Henry on stage, and anyone who’s seen them perform can tell you that their shows are among the most fun in the city. Right now, with so many great acts playing in Boston every week, they stand out. For those of us who love music, there is nothing better than bringing the uninitiated to a show and seeing them fall in love with a new band- I have taken people to Aloud shows and seen this happen time and time again.

The duo has been working on their new album, Exile, for about a year, enlisting friends to help and always keeping their progress updated for us on Facebook, Twitter, and their Youtube channel. Well, it’s finally done and ready to be released into the wild. Now the band has turned to Kickstarter to help fund the production of the cd and an ambitious national tour in the fall. From the Kickstarter page:

We’ve been in the studio for about a year now recording our new album Exile with local producer Daniel Nicholas Daskivich. The album is almost finished, and we are incredibly excited to share it with you! Jeff Lipton of Peerless Mastering—who mastered Fan The Fury, in fact—will return to master Exile, and the cover art will be designed by a local graphic artist. We’ll send the master off to be duplicated and then, then you can be among the first to hear the new tracks.

Exile is a little more moody and different from our previous work. This time around we’ve taken inspiration from our bookshelves and art galleries, and threw in a heavy dose of surrealism. The arrangements go beyond the standard rock band instrumentation and are rich with vocal harmonies, strings, organ lines, brass parts and sound effects. We’ve been very lucky to have such great friends be featured on the record (namely Dan Daskivich, Jon Schmidt, Charles Murphy, Matthew Girard, Beth Holub, Matt Szemela, Josh Penslar, and Veronica Dicker). We’ve caught a lot of the recording process on film and you can see what we’ve been up to on our Studio Journal on YouTube.

With the disappearance of record labels and industry-funded development for artists, we founded our own record label Lemon Merchant Records and invite you to go beyond pre-ordering to help us fund this project. For those of you who are able to put forth more generous financial support for this project, you can make a pledge in any amount. We’ll reward your support with fun fan packages, starting at $20! Packages range from a few CDs, to the Box of Aloud, to a signed guitar. We might even show up at your place, guitars in hand!

As always, your support is greatly appreciated, no matter how little or much you may give financially, and quite frankly, without you there, what we do doesn’t matter, so thanks!

There’s a lot more info on the funding page, including a video introduction from Jen & Henry and a list of rewards for various donations. Pre-order the album for $15 and you’ll get a physical copy of the cd, a digital version of the album, an invitation to the band’s listening party once the album comes out and the gratitude of a hard working band. There are larger rewards for larger donations- please, take a look at the page, listen to the music and help the band bring their sound to people outside Boston.
