C.D. On Songs: Death and the Dance Machine – "At Least"

July 22, 2010

I know you’re excited, tomorrow is Friday. But do you have anything specific to be excited about? Do you need something? How about this show at PRECINCT in Somerville, with Shoney Lamar, Otp, The Shills and today’s entry (their second), Death and the Dance Machine? Is that enough for you? I certainly hope so.

The experience of Death and the Dance Machine’s “At Least” can be… disorienting at first. And probably a few times after that. The song jaunts through the door all crazy-lookin’ and wild-eyed, like the slightly imbalanced person that enters the area and starts engaging somebody/everybody/somebody with their own special brand of madness.

This track’s main character and, in truth, main thing to latch onto is a bright, spirited piano lead that holds sway for the duration of the track. While the piano is the sonic foothold (it becomes this once we enter the chorus – and believe you me, we’ll get to that), it also introduces and embodies the slightly schizophrenic feel of “At Least.”

If the piano line has the listener spinning, then the chorus throws a lasso ’round your feet and hoists you up into the air for a truly weird ride. While the main vocal carries on a pleasing, fully-featured chorus, a secondary vocal rises up alongside, warbling a counterpoint-yet-somehow-fitting whole ‘nother chorus. It’s just close enough to sound interesting, but just far enough to cause a little discomfort. But we think that’s probably what these guys are going for, and we wouldn’t put it past them.

Want to submit your band’s song to C.D. On Songs?

To be reviewed in a C.D. On Songs column:

*Be a Boston-based band/artist.

*Email a single mp3/m4a/etc. (or a download link to one) to cdonsongs (at) gmail (dot) com, with the subject line “C.D. on Songs” (DO NOT send us a bunch of songs and make us pick, we will ignore you). We require a file – not a streaming link.

*Include album cover art if you have any. If you don’t, a band photo or logo is acceptable.

*Tell us when you want to see it! Give us the date of your show and we’ll make sure it runs as close as possible to that day. No kidding.

We will assume that we have your permission to make the song downloadable on Boston Band Crush (readers will want to hear it, after all). If that’s not ok with you, say so and provide us with a link to the song on an embeddable player like ReverbNation – something we can include in the post (and not just link to).
