One Night Band Crush: Noel Coakley

July 28, 2010

Visit the One Night Band website and the Facebook event to find out more about One Night Band 2010 on August 21 at the Middle East downstairs. Check back here each day for more interviews with our participants!

Noel Coakley plays pedal steel guitar, banjo, and ukulele with the Autumn Hollow Band and the John Colvert Band and is one of the organizers behind the New England Americana Festival. His beard is epic.

BBC: What Boston rockers, past or present, would you most like to have a One Night Band with?
NC: Jimmy Ryan, Andrew Mazzone, Duke Levine, Dennis Brennan, Eric Royer, Kier Byrnes

BBC: Did you attend One Night Band last year? If so, what was the highlight? If not, what do you anticipate the event to be like?
NC: I was unfortunately out of town – but I can’t wait to see what comes out of the collaboration. I think the best musical experiences come out of the en vivo moments of connection. Unrepeatable and unplanned. I plan on enjoying the unplanned.

BBC: What is your normal song or part writing process? Will writing three songs in a single day drastically differ from your usual approach to creating music?
NC: I think it usually comes from the idea of having some personal experience and figuring out how to share that in a universally translatable way. Perhaps the specifics (every note, every lyric) are irrelevant. It’s about opening a line of communication, not just a “listen to me.” I’m a being with experience in this world and you are too. How can we talk about that without getting boggled up with just words?

BBC: What Boston band do you have the biggest crush on right now?
NC: Jeff Byrd and Dirty Finch is a great band that has been really playing a great deal lately. Mark Mandeville and Raiane Richards (both from The Accident That Led Me To The World) just put out solo albums which are phenomenal.

Noel organizes the New England Americana Festival, and their next showcase is this Thursday, July 29 at the Hard Rock Café.
