One Night Band Crush: Dan Nicklin

August 12, 2010

Visit the One Night Band website and the Facebook event to find out more about One Night Band 2010 on August 21 at the Middle East downstairs. Check back here each day for more interviews with our participants!

Dan Nicklin is proof that you don’t really need to be talented, you just have to look good faking it. He is also the front man for his super talented rock ensemble OldJack, and is very modest.

BBC: What Boston rockers, past or present, would you most like to have a One Night Band with?
DN: Guru from Gang Starr (RIP), Greg Hawkes, Timo Shanko, Mike Piehl, Andrea Gillis.

BBC: What Boston rockers, past or present, would you most fear having a One Night Band with?
DN: Kenny Irwin, Andrea Gillis, Margaret Glaspy. Because I would be rendered useless in their presence.

BBC: Did you attend One Night Band last year? If so, what was the highlight? If not, what do you anticipate the event to be like?
DN: Yes, and the best bit was the range of emotions in the players’ voices before the sets. Some were worried, others oozing confidence (but he always does that). Oh, and the big smile of relief on our Ashley’s face as the night came to an end.

BBC: What is your normal song or part writing process? Will writing three songs in a single day drastically differ from your usual approach to creating music?
DN: I usually write a melody and the first two to three lines of the song and get with my guitar/bass player and then about an hour later we are done. The chorus defines itself as the verse comes to an end. Then it’s just the structure which we usually let the band break, bend, and add to.

BBC: What Boston band do you have the biggest crush on right now?
DN: Margaret Glaspy who is moving to Brooklyn so it seems unfair. However she made the hair on my arms stand up at Session Americana and I can’t stop singing “Put A Dress On Me.” It’s a crush, you get that, right?
