One Night Band Crush: Matthew Girard

August 13, 2010

Visit the One Night Band website and the Facebook event to find out more about One Night Band 2010 on August 21 at the Middle East downstairs. Check back here each day for more interviews with our participants!

Matthew was going to write something witty and interesting, but reluctantly came to the conclusion that he is neither and decided to be serious. He plays or has played bass guitar with anyone who hires him, some of whom are listed here: The Motion Sick, The Future Everybody, and The Cult of Point Break Society. He’ll also play the trumpet and/or euphonium sometimes with The Motion Sick, Neutral Uke Hotel, The Luxury, and Aloud. He also records music too. A little known fact: he can play a mean tambourine.

BBC: What Boston rockers, past or present, would you most like to have a One Night Band with?
MG: I’d have to say pretty much all of Mission of Burma (current and former members), Bo Barringer, Tony Savarino, Jonathan Donaldson, and I suppose it would be mildly humorous/disastrous if Jim Collins, Chris Barrett and I all played in one band.

BBC: What Boston rockers, past or present, would you most fear having a One Night Band with?
MG: Dropkick Murphys

BBC: Did you attend One Night Band last year? If so, what was the highlight? If not, what do you anticipate the event to be like?
MG: I was unable to attend last year due to some pending nuptials. I imagine that the experience will be a rather long day, the performances a little sloppy but full of vim and vigor.

BBC: What is your normal song or part writing process? Will writing three songs in a single day drastically differ from your usual approach to creating music?
MG: Well, being that I’m most commonly identified as a bass player, my input in songwriting has been rather slim over the past few years. When I DO write songs, it pretty much takes about a year per song to get everything in some sort of order… and I can’t write lyrics. I’m actually hoping this will push the boundaries of what I’m able/willing/capable of doing.

BBC: What Boston band do you have the biggest crush on right now?
MG: I’m a fan of Static of the Gods and the adopted Boston band Golden Bloom.
