One Nigh Band Crush: Grant Kristofek

August 18, 2010

Visit the One Night Band website and the Facebook event to find out more about One Night Band 2010 on August 21 at the Middle East downstairs. Check back here each day for more interviews with our participants!

Late one night in the early ’90s, Grant was first mesmerized by the strains of electric guitar while struggling to understand the deeper implications of Newton’s 2nd law. His ears were piqued by the mesmerizing strains of Otis Rush’s guitar singing “Gambler’s Blues” on the House of Blues Radio Hour hosted by Jake and Elwood Blues. After convincing his family to allow him an Epiphone Les Paul Jr, Grant’s physics problem sets soon became punctuated by epic jams alongside the likes of Jimi Hendrix, Duane Allman, Jerry Garcia, and Buddy Guy.

Today, Grant honors his early heroes playing guitar for Cambridge’s very own Electric Laser People.

BBC: What Boston rockers, past or present, would you most like to have a One Night Band with?
GK: The Wandas (present) and Aerosmith (present)

BBC: What Boston rockers, past or present, would you most fear having a One Night Band with?

BBC: Did you attend One Night Band last year? If so, what was the highlight? If not, what do you anticipate the event to be like?
GK: Last year I was “gone fishing” in Canada but I heard from our drummer Cullen Corley that it was a riot. I will try not to have too many preconceptions but I am looking forward to experiencing the chemistry of my ONB.

BBC: What is your normal song or part writing process? Will writing three songs in a single day drastically differ from your usual approach to creating music?
GK: Usually Electric Laser People will jam on a riff, chord, or melody we like until we settle into a good groove. Then our singer Dan Paluska will start to rant lyrically until we have a more solid concept for the song. At this point, we typically apply the KLF Manual formula for writing a hit song. I don’t think it will be too radical a departure to write three songs in one day with my ONB bandmates and I’m psyched for the challenge.

BBC: What Boston band do you have the biggest crush on right now?
GK: The Highway… Their new album Forest People is killer.
