Show Crush: Slow Century / Hot Molasses / Call 2 Consciousness / The Tin Thistles at the Middle East upstairs Friday 9/3

September 2, 2010

Dubbing the night a “dual anniversary” party, Slow Century and Hot Molasses are inviting us all to celebrate with them as they pass out of band childhood and into band adolescence. They’ve grown up a bit, ready to leave the yard and head to the playground. They’ll make some new friends and maybe even sneak off behind the bushes for some clumsy, over the clothes making out with the other bands.

Slow Century, the Marya and Matthew McLaughlin led ensemble, has been playing together for four years, and they’ve perfected the boy / girl vocal dynamic in a way that only a brother – sister team who’ve been performing together for most of their lives could possibly hope to. Their songs slowly make their way from the stage to swirl throughout the audience, eventually rising to the rafters and lifting everyone up with them. Hot Molasses, celebrating three years as a band, are steeped in folk but aren’t afraid to pile on power pop hooks and toss some keyboards in here and there. Call 2 Consciousness isn’t celebrating an anniversary, but we think you’ll enjoy their style, best described as punk and modern rock mixed with whatever else happens to strike their fancy. The Tin Thistles will get the evening started off right with their sing-a-long inspired pub rock.

8pm / 18+ / $10
