Flashback Crush: MIXTAPE: 1967 at the Rosebud this Saturday!

September 30, 2010

Summer may be over, but this Saturday night, it’s gonna be all sorts of  Summer of Love at the Rosebud in Somerville.  The MIXTAPE series is back for another round of immersive musical nostalgia, and this time we’re gassing up the magic VW bus and taking you back to the fab and groovy year of 1967.

After the massive success of June’s MIXTAPE: 1993, the question loomed large: how in the world to follow up? Fans clamored for a night dedicated to a similarly fondly remembered year from their relatively-recent adolescence — 1997 and 1984, in particular — but BBC Queen Bee Ashley Willard and I instead wanted to showcase the potential for MIXTAPE to celebrate not just the recent past, but pretty much any year that popular music existed. And with that, the target year made itself patently obvious. With hit records from The Beatles, The Stones, The Kinks, The Who, The Doors, Jefferson Airplane, Velvet Underground, Aretha Franklin, Cream, Jimi Hendrix, and The Beach Boys (among so, so many more), 1967’s Summer of Love is the perfect target for a MIXTAPE tribute.

MIXTAPE: 1967 will be anchored by two of Boston’s newest rising stars in Oranjuly and This Blue Heaven — who together have celebrated two of the city’s biggest pop rock CD releases this year — alongside two supergroups fronted by absolute Boston institutions. Ad Frank kicks off the night with his brilliantly named all-star band Somerville of Love, featuring Joel Reader (Fatal Flaw, Pansy Division), Valerie Forgione (Van Elk, Mistle Thrush), and Mora Precarious (Ketman), while John Powhida closes the night with Johnny St. John and the Doom Band, featuring John Brookhouse (Dirty Truckers), Jim Zavadoski (Damn Personals, BrownBoot), and Russ Patterson.

Icing on the flower power cake? Joe Turner (of Joe Turner and the Seven Levels) will be providing trippy, psychedelic lighting for the duration of the show! There are also sure to be surprises, special guests, lava lamps, patchouli oil, bell bottoms, and an abundance of peace and love.

And, my word, how about that tremendous poster from Nicole at Daykamp Creative?

Far out!
