Show Crush: The Konks (final show) / Tampoffs / Tunnel of Love / Triple Thick at Great Scott tomorrow

January 28, 2011

It’s been an emotional experience this week for yours truly. Between the live interview with Kurt Konk (aka. Yukki Gipe) Wednesday on Gorilla Got Me and the many excellent articles written in various publications, I’ve found myself tearing up a number of times. Even now, as I write about the final show of local garage rock’s beloved staple The Konks, I find myself not only mourning the disbanding of one of my favorite acts, but once again mourning the loss of The Abbey Lounge where I was first introduced to the intolerant trio.

The Konks have been playing their raw stripped down fuzzed out boombastic shows for 12 years, and during that time they have demonstrated over and over again that they just don’t give a shit about the rules. Few record releases, minimal gear, less airplay, and a title song “29 Fingers” that doesn’t mince words: “We’re The Konks, and we don’t care!” The Konks are the kind of band with the attitude that most other bands strive for before getting caught up in the whirlwind of promotional vices. Their music stands on its own and has brought their loyal fans to countless sold out shows around town. This is what I will miss most about the band and how they fit into Boston rock, plain and simple.

For those of you who haven’t seen The Konks, get yourself down to Great Scott tomorrow night for a classic Abbey Lounge lineup:
