Show Crush: Girlfriends / Beware the Dangers of a Ghost Scorpion / NYC UFOs / Whir at the Middle East up tonight

April 14, 2011

Beloved trio Girlfriends have come into one heckuva 2011: they were awarded “Rock Artist of the Year” at the 2010 Boston Music Awards; they created enough buzz at SXSW to scare away Arnie The Strongest Man in the World; and they recently graced the cover of the Boston Phoenix. Tonight, they will be releasing their new 7″ The Cave Kids at the Middle East upstairs. The band will be bashing away in that special way we’ve come to know and love with their brand of east-coast-punk-meets-west-coast-surf that would even make Wavvvvvvvvves front man Nathan Williams put down his joint and pay attention.

Rounding out the line-up for the night are Beware The Dangers Of A Ghost Scorpion!, who dance in between old style surf rock and rockabilly with just a hint of horror and suspense, NYC UFOs who bring fuzzed out riffs and catchy hypnotic-hooks to the dancefloor (very reminiscent of early Strokes), and Whir, who jump effortlessly between shoegaze and that indie rock sound I’ve been hearing about so much these days.
