Show Crush: Mount Peru / Guillermo Sexo / The Russians / Muy Cansado at the Middle East Upstairs tomorrow

April 28, 2011

Tomorrow night, the Middle East upstairs sports one of the hottest line-ups we’ve seen all year. Mount Peru take one part Americana, two parts Bowie, one part Narragansett, adds a splash of trumpet, puts it in a blender and serves it over ice (but like, musically, you do not drink them).

Guillermo Sexo kick out the jams with a full frontal assault on your ears. They pounce on indie punk and wrestle it to the ground while simultaneously wrapping it in psychedelia and hairy shoegaze. The result is a fuzzy rock beast that will hold you in thrall until the last note is struck.

If there was ever a band the revitalize the alt-country movement from the early-to-mid-’90s (which we really hope someone does) and mix it with the vibe of Grandaddy, it would be The Russians . Lead cosmonaut Scott Janovitz deservedly won the Boston Music Award for Best Singer/Songwriter last year, and on the live front he rounds up some of our town’s strongest players; you can bet on a solid and rocking set from them.

Rounding out the night is beloved local trio Muy Cansado. If Radiohead, The Pixies and Cream had a love child, they might sound like Muy Cansado, who’ll be getting ready for their June residency at the Rosebud.
