Show Crush: Lady Lamb the Beekeeper / Happiest Lion at the Mideast up tomorrow (early show)

June 2, 2011

There are a lot of Ladies who crowd the music scene nowadays: Lady Antebellum, Lady GaGa, and Lady Lazarus come to mind. While each of those ladies has her own niche audience and creates her own specific brand of music, none of their songwriting compares to Boston’s (by way of Maine and Brooklyn) leading Lady: Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, who comes back to Boston tomorrow for an early show (6 PM) at the Middle East Upstairs.

I think we’re at a point where we can call Lady Lamb the Beekeeper, aka Aly Spaltro, “prolific.” She’s released four albums in as many years and each possesses more passion and poetic strife than its predecessor – every one strives and leans towards the sun like an indoor plant. And how can you ignore that voice? It lays somewhere in-between Jeff Mangum’s ghost-wanting sincereity and Nina Simone’s ghost-haunting soul – there really isn’t another out there like it. She’s even caught the ears of Amanda Palmer, Evan Dando, and Sharon Van Etten; Spaltro is not to be missed when she comes ’round here.

Opening the show is Happiest Lion (Caleb Groh if you’re nastay). Groh’s music shuffles and squeaks in the barn where they were seemingly created in. If you’re a fan of the Felice Brothers, Sufjan Stevens or Bowerbirds, you’ll fancy Caleb’s delicate songs.

Doors: 6 PM
