Show Crush: Black Thai / Birch Hill Dam / Phoenix Metal Issue Release Party & BBQ at O’Brien’s on Thursday

August 24, 2011

Tomorrow night, O’Brien’s and Born of Fire will host an afterparty for the Boston Phoenix Metal Issue release which will double as an end of the summer BBQ, featuring Doug Sherman of Gozu as the grillmaster. You too can experience a brush with greatness, or at least a basting brush and some tasty BBQ sauce.

I have a theory that the very existence of Black Thai might have embarassed Chris Cornell back into Soundgarden, whether he’s heard it or not. Seriously I bet these guys wouldn’t have to turn down that far for Jim Healey’s powerful vocals to be audible without a PA. They’ll be returning to the stage after tracking new material at New Alliance. One of my favorite things about Black Thai shows is running into some of the local pop songwriters who don’t normally listen to metal, but love their Black Thai. So does BBC. Good songwriting is good songwriting, and it trumps perceived notions of genre every time.

Birch Hill Dam from Gardner, MA will open the show. Their new release Colossus is up on their Bandcamp page.

In addition to the print issue and the live show, the Phoenix will be posting a free 15 song Boston metal compilation over on their Bandcamp page featuring Revocation, Ramming Speed, DOOMRIDERS, Motherboar, Cave In, Death Ray Vision, Acaro, PanzerBastard, Lunglust, Blessed Offal, Scaphism, Razormaze, Proselyte, Black Thai and Birch Hill Dam on Thursday.
